Literacy Coach: Veronica Bacino

English Language Arts (ELA)

Our ELA program uses the EL Education curriculum, which is built around engaging modules that connect reading and writing to meaningful, real-world topics. Each grade explores a different set of texts while building strong literacy and critical thinking skills.

In 6th grade, the modules are Greek Mythology, where students read The Lightning Thief; Critical Problems and Design Solutions, where they read The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind; American Indian Boarding Schools, where they read Two Roads; and Remarkable Accomplishments in Space Science, where they read Hidden Figures.

In 7th grade, the modules are The Lost Children of Sudan, where students read A Long Walk to Water; Epidemics (2021), where they read Patient Zero; The Harlem Renaissance, where they read One Last Word; and Plastic Pollution, where they read Trash Vortex.

In 8th grade, the modules are Folklore of Latin America, where students read Summer of the Mariposas; Food Choices, where they read The Omnivore’s Dilemma; Voices of the Holocaust, where they read Maus; and Lessons from Japanese American Internment, where they read Farewell to Manzanar.

Through these modules, students build strong reading, writing, and critical thinking skills.
